How to Embrace Change and Find Courage

How to Start Over in Life

This blog post is for you if you've ever failed or had to start over. If you find yourself in that place right now, know that you're not alone. A few years ago, I was in a similar situation.

I was doing a part-time ministry job, going to school full-time, and trying to figure out how to make ends meet. The ministry job paid very little, and I needed to find a way to make more money, especially since I was recently engaged.

Living at home in a small town where you had to drive 20-30 minutes just to reach the nearest city added to the challenge. I had to figure out how to support myself and make things work. I took on a lot of responsibilities with the mindset of making a difference and achieving my goals.

However, life threw a curveball at me. I developed an autoimmune condition that caused me to lose almost all my hair within a couple of weeks.

This added another layer of difficulty to my already challenging situation. Imagine having to make yourself known, attract clients, go to school, do ministry, and make money while dealing with an illness that made you suffer and itch constantly. Doctors were not much help, offering only a diagnosis and antidepressants that worsened my condition.

I found myself gaining weight, feeling sleepy while driving, and eventually questioning who I had become. This wasn't the life I had envisioned a year ago.

Sometimes, as we journey through life, we hit dips or valleys that seem endless and dark. No matter how much light you try to bring into those places, they can feel overwhelmingly dark.

In such a dark place, I began to ask myself tough questions. Why was I there? What decisions had led me to this point?

Even decisions that seemed good at the time could be flawed if made under incorrect assumptions. I tried to start a business without understanding sales or marketing, thinking that merely having a camera and recording something would bring success. It was like throwing things at the wall and hoping something would stick.

Feeling down, I wanted to get on camera and market myself, but I struggled with my self-image. The discrepancy between my potential and my reality caused deep shame. Holding onto shame and guilt can lead to apathy, making you wonder why you even try. If you stay in that place too long, it can become part of your personality.

If you're reading this, you likely don't want to remain in places of shame, guilt, and apathy. You want more and to grow. There's a saying that the secret of happiness is freedom, and the secret of freedom is courage. Emotions have different frequencies, and negative emotions keep you low.

Courage, however, can break through those negative emotions and lead you to positive ones like love, purpose, and fulfillment, which I believe God created us to experience.

If you're in a place of shame and guilt, the first step is to give yourself grace and forgive yourself for past failures. Today is a new opportunity filled with new graces. This principle of God's long-suffering and mercy allows us to try again and live a more sanctified life.

You have an opportunity today to say that the past is dead.

The new you is courageous, joyful, self-educating, and willing to do what's required. But it starts with giving yourself grace and forgiveness, followed by making a decision about the type of person you want to be. This decision will determine your life's direction, goals, and daily actions.

Who do you want to be? Once you've decided, it's about planning and taking actions that align with who you want to be to achieve your goals. It takes courage to start again, especially when others may doubt you. But that's the past version of you, not the version of you today.

Who will you be henceforth?

When you decide, you can know you have the courage to start again.

I'll see you in the next post.
