The Prosperity Gospel vs The Poverty Gospel (Living by Faith in Business)

This post is raw and uncut. Straight from the heart. Off the dome.

We’re talking about the prosperity gospel and what I call the poverty gospel—two extremes that have crept into the minds of well-meaning Christians when it comes to faith, money, and business.

Somewhere along the way, many believers picked up the idea that following Jesus means you’re guaranteed wealth. Just believe hard enough, sow enough seed, say the right prayer—and boom, you’re a millionaire. That’s the prosperity gospel. It preaches abundance, but it twists Scripture into a transaction. You give your life to Christ, and in return, you get all the money and material blessings you’ve ever dreamed of.

And then on the other end, we’ve got the poverty gospel. This mindset says that to follow Christ, you must reject all wealth, live broke, and suffer for the kingdom. That owning anything is inherently sinful, and if you’re not scraping by, you’re not holy enough.

But neither of these are biblical.

The Bible doesn’t promise riches. It also doesn’t command poverty. What it does say is this: "This is the will of God—your sanctification." (1 Thess. 4:3)

It’s not about money. It’s about transformation.

Look at Job. He had wealth. He lost it. He suffered. God allowed it all—not because of a lack of faith, but because of his faith. Then yes, Job was restored. But the point wasn’t the money. It was the refining.

God might bless you with wealth. He might take it away. Either way, the goal is that you depend on Him.

Romans says, "While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Not while we were rich. Not while we were broke. While we were enemies.

This is supernatural love.

And yes—we live in a material world. We need homes. We need to eat. We run businesses. We work. That’s not anti-God. That’s part of how He’s wired us. From the Garden, God gave Adam a job. He gave him dominion. He told him to subdue the earth and be fruitful. You were made to produce.

So we’ve got to think right about this.

When business isn’t going well, it’s tempting to blame God. To say, “Lord, I’m trying my best—where’s my breakthrough?”

But God’s not your vending machine.

Your job is to bring the right offering. Like Cain and Abel—one brought an offering that pleased God, the other didn’t. The same applies in the marketplace. You bring the wrong thing to the wrong people, and the market will tell you.

So what do you do? Adjust. Don’t blame. Don’t sulk. Bring the right thing.

We get back what we put out. Not in a karmic way. In a cause-and-effect way. If you bring high value, you get rewarded. If you bring minimum wage thinking, expect minimum wage return.

Use leverage. And I don’t just mean financial. I’m talking time leverage. Systems. Automation. Webinars. That’s what I help people with—putting leverage in place to grow their business and reach people without burning out.

But even that’s not the goal. God is.

You’re going to die. Let’s not sugarcoat it. Your ring? Your bank account? Your followers? They’re staying here. You won’t. Your soul will.

So get your soul right first.

Call on Christ. Say, "Lord, I need You. I need to be right with You. Be my Savior. Lead me."

That’s the priority.

Everything else—your business, your wealth, your platform—those are tools. Vehicles. Opportunities to glorify God. To steward. To serve.

And yes, even to profit—because profit is growth, and growth isn’t bad. But when profit becomes your God? That’s when it gets twisted.

Listen: obedience is God’s love language.

Let’s stop making excuses. Let’s stop idolizing struggle or success.

The prosperity gospel will wreck your faith when tragedy strikes.
The poverty gospel will cripple your potential to make an impact.

What we need is the true gospel—the gospel that calls us to pick up our cross, deny ourselves, and follow Jesus... whether He leads us through abundance or through lack.

This isn’t just a message. It’s a call. A challenge to you as a faith-driven entrepreneur.

Let’s stop playing games with our theology. Let’s get back to truth. Let’s get our souls right. Let’s build something that glorifies God and impacts lives.
