Online communities are becoming a staple in the consulting and info product world, offering immense value to both business owners and their clients. However, starting a community isn’t just about creating a fun side project. When strategically integrated, a community can maximize the value of your core business and generate additional revenue.
In this post, I’ll share how I helped my friend Don build a community that not only aligned with his business but also added a new revenue stream by leveraging a unique model that you, too, can implement.
Why Start an Online Community?
Communities bring people together who share common goals, interests, or challenges. For consultants and info product creators, an online community can:
• Position you as a thought leader in your field.
• Create a recurring revenue stream.
• Increase customer loyalty by providing ongoing value.
However, not all communities are created equal. The key is to build a community that aligns with your strengths and supports your business objectives.
Case Study: Helping Don Build His Community
Don, a software developer, wanted to start a community. Initially, he saw it as a side project—a fun way to connect with like-minded individuals. But after a few questions, we uncovered an approach that turned his community into an asset for his business.
When starting any community, the first thing you need to do is understand yourself. Are you better at the technical aspects of your field, or are you more skilled at client interactions, sales, and deal-making? Don discovered that he excelled at networking and finding new projects rather than the technical side.
With this insight, we identified an opportunity to align his community with his strengths.
Creating a Unique Community Model That Generates Income
Instead of creating a typical community around teaching others about software development, I suggested a different model. Don could build a community of top-notch technicians and contractors who pay to be part of it. In return, Don would leverage his sales skills to bring in projects and feed these opportunities directly to the community members.
By focusing on connecting his community members to paid projects, Don created a recurring revenue stream for himself (MRR) while supporting his core business. This approach allowed him to keep two essential pipelines full: sales (new projects) and fulfillment (high-quality tech talent).
How to Build a Community That Supports Your Core Business
If you’re considering building a community, think about how it can support your main business activities. Ask yourself:
1. What are my strengths? Are you better at sales or technical work?
2. Who should my community serve? Potential clients, collaborators, or other industry professionals?
3. What value can I offer that others aren’t? Consider how you can leverage your unique skills to provide value.
In Don’s case, he found that by focusing on his ability to source projects, he could create a community that supports him, generates revenue, and enhances his business.
